A series of structures underneath Connaught Bridge, between London City Airport and Albert Dock, look like a sculpture installation but I don’t think they are. There is a set of giant ventilation tubes of different lengths and widths, growing from the ground then bending down at the neck; a fat brick cylinder; and two concrete blocks, shaped like huge wedges of cheese or back-garden air raid shelters like the one my grandparents had – one of them looks as if it might be holding up the bridge, but it isn’t. Once these objects must have had a use but now they seem to be simply decorative.
